Staying close during a busy season at work

Name the end date. Protect one hour for the house. Temporary has a way of becoming the marriage.

One of you has a deadline, a travel week, or a season that eats every evening. The other person starts living around a closed laptop. You tell yourselves it is temporary. Temporary has a way of becoming the marriage.

This page is only about staying close during a busy season. Not how to quit the job. Not how to feel less tired. One protected hour, and a few small check-ins that take twenty seconds.

Who this is for

Couples in a real busy season — not a vague “we’re busy” that never ends. There is a date when the season should ease: a launch, a quarter end, a trip home. If there is no date, this page will not save you. You need a different talk.

What to protect

  1. Name the end date out loud. Write it.
  2. Pick one hour that still belongs to the house. Even one night a week. Work does not come to that hour.
  3. Use twenty-second bids on the other nights: a text that is not logistics, a hand on a shoulder, “I see you.”
  4. If you miss the hour, set the next one before you open the laptop again.

Work can have the days until the 22nd. I am asking for Thursday 8 to 9 with no laptop. I will come back to the table at 8.

The busy person does not get to be a ghost and also be hurt that the house feels cold. The other person does not get to punish the deadline with a trial every night. The hour is the deal.

Two questions

What if the deadline moves?

Name the new date in the same conversation. A moving deadline with no new date is “we’ll see.” We’ll see is how the season becomes the marriage.

What if I am the one at home with the children?

You still get a named break during the season. Write it. The busy season is not an excuse to make one adult into the entire household.
