What to text after a marriage fight

The fight is over, you are in different rooms, and your thumb is hovering over the phone. You want to explain. You want to be understood. You want the last word. Almost every text written in that mood starts the fight again.

This page is only about the first text after a fight. Not the whole repair. One message that does not add a second injury.

The only text that helps tonight

Own one thing you did. Do not explain why. Do not add “but you also.” Do not analyze their childhood. Do not send a voice note of your speech.

I raised my voice and I left you with the evening. I am sorry for both. I can sit after coffee tomorrow. Tonight I am not going to keep texting.

Change the facts to yours. Then put the phone down. If they do not answer, do not send three follow-ups. The next move is a time to sit, not a thread.

What not to send

1. “I guess I am the only one who cares.”
2. “Fine. Whatever.”
3. A paragraph that starts with “I am sorry” and ends with their list of crimes.
4. A screenshot of something they said last year.

If the house is unsafe, do not text your way through it. Get local help.

Two questions

What if I was not the one who started it?

You can still own your part. “I slammed the door” is yours even if they started the topic. Their part can wait until you sit.

What if they only want to fight by text?

Reply once: “I will sit at 8:30 tomorrow. I am not going to do this on the phone.” Then stop.
