A 20-minute money meeting that does not ruin dinner
Money talks go bad when they become a trial. Twenty minutes, one month, one number.

Money fights rarely start with money. They start with a mood. Someone is scared of the card. Someone else is tired of being treated like the careless one. By the time the bank app is open, you are no longer talking about a number. You are on trial.
This page is only about a twenty-minute money meeting that does not ruin dinner. One month. One number. No character reports.
Who this is for
Couples who share a household and keep postponing “the money talk” because the last one ended badly. You do not need a five-year plan tonight. You need to look at this month together without becoming enemies.
How to run twenty minutes
Set a timer. Open one shared view: balances, bills due, and the next payday. Do not audit a coffee. A coffee is not a character.
- Each person says one fear in a single sentence, and one hope in a single sentence.
- You choose one number to move this month: a debt payment, a small fun envelope, or a buffer. Only one.
- Write that number on a note you both can see.
- When the timer rings, stop. Sit on the same sofa for a few minutes. That is how you remember you are on the same side of the table.
Use this line if you freeze:
The number I am scared of this month is _____. The number I hope for is _____. I want twenty minutes and no talk about who is the careful one.
If one of you avoids the meeting
Do not chase them with more spreadsheets. Ask what feels dangerous about looking. Often it is shame, not laziness. Shame needs a smaller first step: a photo of one bill, not a life plan.

Two questions
What if we do not earn the same?
The meeting is still one table and one month. The number you move can be a bill, a buffer, or a fun envelope. You do not have to settle who is more virtuous.
What if the meeting turns into a fight anyway?
Call a pause with a clock time. “I will sit again tomorrow at 8:30. Tonight we stop.” A longer meeting is often just a prettier fight.
