How to divide the mental load — not just the chores
Splitting tasks is not enough if one person still makes the list. Give each thinking job one owner.

The fight is not about who took out the trash. It is about who noticed the trash, remembered the bags, and knew tomorrow is trash day. One of you is the household’s brain. The other is a pair of hands that waits to be assigned.
This page is only about dividing the noticing, not just the chores. If you only split tasks, the same person will still lie awake making the list.
Who this is for
Women who carry the invisible work, and partners who think they “help a lot.” You want the week to have owners, not a manager and an assistant.
How to divide it
Sit for twenty minutes. Write the jobs that require thinking, not just doing: school forms, food for the week, doctor appointments, whose family gets a call, the birthday coming. Then assign each job to one person for a month. The owner does the remembering. The other person does not supervise in the doorway.
- Name ten thinking jobs. Be specific. “Kids” is not a job. “School email and forms” is a job.
- Give each job one owner. Write the name.
- The owner decides how. No live commentary unless they ask.
- Review on Sunday in five minutes. Trade one job if it is crushing someone. Do not trade all ten back.
I need you to own school forms this month. That means you notice them, you answer them, and I do not remind you.
If they say “just tell me what to do,” that is the old system. The point is they hold the list. Helping when asked is not owning.
Two questions
What if they do it “wrong”?
Unless a child is unsafe, let it be their way for two weeks. Correcting the method puts you back in the manager chair.
What if I am the one who never notices?
Pick two thinking jobs and put them on your phone calendar. Do not wait to be asked. Asking you is still her job if you do not take the list.
